All Along the (Smartphone) Watchtower
How to block text messages and calls, monitor and secure your data and restrict your kids’ web access, all with Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls.
Nobody likes getting unsolicited phone calls—they take time and usually come at the most inconvenient moment, like when you just sit down to dinner. And most parents are concerned about how—and how much—their children use their phones. Maybe you already know about some of the free and add-on controls provided by Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls.
But are you aware of all the ways Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls help you protect your family and your privacy, control how (and when) your children can use their phones and alleviate worries about overspending?
Block calls, email and text messages
Your entire family will benefit from the free Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls that enable you to block telemarketing calls, Internet spam and even calls and text messages from specific numbers. With Call and Message Blocking, you can stop those prank calls your neighbor’s kid finds so amusing. Internet Spam Blocking lets you stop up to 15 email addresses from flooding your inbox with messages. And Data Usage Alerts keep you posted on how much of your monthly allowance remains, which can prevent unexpected extra charges on your monthly bills.
Protect your privacy, device and data
The Network Programs & Permissions service protects the privacy of each family member by setting limits on the personal information (including location) that each of your apps is able to access.
Safeguard the contents of your phone with Verizon Mobile Security, an Android security app that offers basic virus scan and safe browsing protection for free. Upgrade to Premium and you’ll also get mobile recovery features and app safeguards.
Additional device and accessory protection options are available via Total Equipment Protection in case of loss, theft, damage or defect after the manufacturer’s warranty expires.
Manage your kids’ access
While there’s plenty of great content that young kids and teens can access on their phones, many parents worry that their children will access websites and videos that are intended primarily for adults.
Verizon’s free Content Filters give you the power to restrict the content accessible on each phone by age group—such as children 7 and over, teens 13 and up, and young adults over 17.
Usage Controls, available for a small monthly fee, is among the most popular feature in Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls. It allows you to place precise limits on each phone’s data use, minutes, messages—and even on the time of day each phone can be used. This means you can rest easier knowing your tweens and teens can’t, say, blow an entire month’s messaging allowance on a couple of hours-long texting sessions with their friends.
You can also control your children’s purchases by restricting the amount of money they can spend on ringtones, music and other downloads.
Feel more secure while on the go
Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls also provide important services that allow you to keep a virtual eye on your kids. With Family Locator, use your phone, PC or tablet to gather and view detailed information on where each family member is at any given moment, even providing addresses, maps and driving directions for each location. You can also get text messages or emails that alert you when your children arrive and leave specific places, such as school, home and sports fields.
