A. Three-axis gyroscope

One important aspect of analyzing your swing is being able to measure the full range of motion from start to finish. That’s where Zepp’s built-in three-axis “MEMS” gyroscope comes in. MEMS—microelectromechanical systems—are basically microchips that also include impossibly tiny moving parts.

By using a continuously vibrating mass of some sort (like a wheel or two U-shaped rods) and measuring “Coriolis effects,” MEMS gyros can sense and quantify a device’s rotational movements. Imagine a windowless room that’s slowly rotating to the left (counterclockwise), and you’re sitting against one wall inside the room with a bowling ball in your lap. If you roll the ball toward the opposite wall, the ball will appear to curve to the right. But were an observer to watch from above, outside the rotating room, he’d see the ball move in a straight line.

That apparent rightward curve (called “deflection”) is an example of the Coriolis effect. You can think of the vibrating mass in a MEMS gyro as the bowling ball and the rotating room as your device. Sensors built into the MEMS chip measure the direction and intensity of that rotation.

How does the three-axis gyroscope work for Zepp?

The MEMS chip in the Zepp can measure rotation around three different axes (“ak-zeez”), which allows Zepp to capture pitch (up/down tilt), yaw (left/right twist), and roll (longitudinal spin) data. Zepp uses that raw data to create a 3D model of your golf swing.

B. Dual accelerometers

Faster swings make for more powerful and longer drives, which is why knowing your swing acceleration is vital. Zepp’s dual accelerometers capture the speed of your swing by measuring g-force (“g” as in “gravitational”), a measurement of acceleration felt as weight.

You’ve experienced this many times. When you ride in a car that goes quickly through a bend in the road, you feel your body being pushed in the opposite direction. That’s g-force.

How are the accelerometers put to work? Zepp uses two of these sensors for better accuracy and tracks how fast your club head and hands are traveling, as well as in what direction.

C. ARM processor

By combining data from the accelerometers and the gyroscope, Zepp can derive a full picture of your swing as it moves through space, including speed, angle and rotation. Its ARM processor crunches all the numbers, using advanced algorithms to translate the sensors’ raw data into readable, useful information at 1,000 data points per second.

D. Bluetooth® 2.1

Zepp uses Bluetooth, a wireless communication technology, to transfer your swing data to your compatible iOS or Android™ device for replay and analysis.

How everything works together
