Which Prepaid Phone Is for You?
The days of pay-as-you-go devices with limited features are over. Verizon now offers No Annual Contract plans for best-selling, high-performance smartphones.
Switching to a prepaid monthly plan? That doesn’t mean getting stuck with a basic, no-frills phone.
More than 20 smartphones, including the exclusive Droid Turbo by Motorola, are available under Verizon’s No Annual Contract plans. Most of them are 4G LTE-capable, which means you can enjoy blockbuster summer movies or quirky videos without frustrating delays.
Here are five of our favorites:
Best for endurance: Droid Turbo by Motorola
Exclusive to Verizon, the Droid Turbo by Motorola is built to last all day and night. Not only will this feature-laden 4G LTE powerhouse operate for up to 48 hours on a single charge, but with its Turbo Charger, you can add up to eight hours of battery life in just 15 minutes.
Besides its long-lasting battery, the Droid Turbo offers a handful of killer features, many of which aren’t available with other smartphones. They include a 5.2-inch quad HD display, a 21-megapixel rear-facing camera, 4K video-recording capability (that’s four times the resolution of HD) and a 2.7 GHz quad-core processor. In other words, if smartphones were characters in a monster movie, the Droid Turbo would be Godzilla.
Best for staying on budget: Moto G
A smartphone that’s stylish yet affordable? Absolutely. With the Moto G™, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the phone’s key features, many of which you’d typically find on a much higher-priced smartphone.
Not only does the Moto G sport a sleek, curved design, but it’s also loaded with a sharp 4.5-inch HD display (with scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass)—great for watching videos on the fly. It also has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, so you’re all set to impress your friends with high-quality photos shot in any situation. To boot, the phone’s 1.2 GHz quad-core processor means your apps will run smoothly.
Bring Your Own Device
If you don’t want to buy a new prepaid cell phone, Verizon Wireless provides its customers with another option: a 4G SIM Activation Kit. Simply purchase the kit, insert the SIM card in your Verizon 4G smartphone, activate your prepaid plan and presto: You’re now connected to the nation’s largest, most reliable 4G LTE network. Happy downloading!
Best for audio: HTC Desire 612 in Black
Whether you’re listening to music or watching action movies, the HTC Desire® 612 is an audiophile’s dream. The Desire 612’s front-facing HTC BoomSound™ speakers mean everything from movie dialogue to music lyrics blast directly toward you. Plus, the dual speakers are supported by a built-in, volume-boosting amplifier for even richer sound.
Besides delivering an immersive sonic experience, the phone’s other cool features include HTC BlinkFeed™, a personalized live feed of news and social media of your own choosing, and Zoe™, which automatically edits your photos and videos into movies. And you can view these apps and more without squinting, thanks to the 4G LTE phone’s vibrant 4.7-inch qHD screen.
Best for selfies: Samsung Galaxy J1
The Samsung Galaxy J1™ makes it even easier to take a picture of yourself. The Galaxy J1’s Palm Selfie function lets you snap an image by moving your hand over the phone’s screen. No more awkward fumbling for the shutter button! With its Tap to Take Pics feature, you can snap a shot by touching anywhere on the 4.3-inch WVGA screen.
While making good use of the Galaxy J1’s 5-megapixel rear-facing camera or 2-megapixel front-facing camera is pretty cool, simply holding the device in your hand is also satisfying. With its soft-touch back, rounded edges and slim profile, the Galaxy J1 offers an exceptionally comfortable, ergonomic grip.
Best for outdoors: Moto E™
If you spend a good part of your day outside the office doing fieldwork or you happen to be an adventure junkie, the Moto E is a solid pick. That’s because it’s made with tough Corning Gorilla Glass 3, so the screen is more scratch-resistant and flexible. Throw in anti-smudge coating, and you have a phone that’s great for when things get a little messy.
Other perks include a dazzling 4.5-inch Quad HD display—perfect for streaming video and playing games—and a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor that helps you multitask with ease. The subtle curved design of the Moto E also makes it fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. Plus, you’ll enjoy all the benefits of Google’s top apps, including YouTube™ and Google Maps™.
