HAMMOND, IN — Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site in Hammond, Ind., which improves voice and data coverage in the eastside community of Hessville.

The new cell site, which is equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, empowers more Verizon Wireless customers to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging email and text, picture and video messaging as well as making calls.

“Verizon Wireless continues to invest in its network in Indiana to meet the growing demands for data usage and calls by customers around the state,” said T.J. Fox, region president, Verizon Wireless. “As Indiana makes way for the upcoming Super Bowl, our customers will stay connected along with the fans who will be coming to Indiana for the state’s first-time hosting of the championship game. As we closely monitor network usage, fans, tourists and Hoosiers alike will all have a seamless experience.”

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed – $6 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $1.15 billion on improvements to its wireless network in Indiana.

In addition to the ongoing investment in its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has also been launching the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE). Since its initial launch, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

By 2013, Verizon Wireless will have full nationwide 4G LTE coverage everywhere the Verizon 3G network is available today.
