BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and LAS VEGAS, NV — Verizon today kicked off its third annual Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Conference, a gathering of mobile application developers, entrepreneurs, network experts and others being held in Las Vegas. The VDC Conference offers insights into the consumer app marketplace, opportunities in the growing world of M2M applications and the ongoing rollout of the nation’s fastest, most advanced 4G LTE network.

“Applications are driving how consumers and businesses are using their wireless devices, and developers play a key role in creating new and innovative ways to help users realize the potential of wireless,” said Marni Walden, chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless. “Verizon – through the VDC, our Innovation Centers, and, most of all, our 4G LTE network – is at the forefront of innovation, providing opportunities every day for developers to deliver growth in the mobile application space.”

During the opening session, keynoted by Walden, Verizon updated developers on its mobile application storefront, which is now available on more than 20 different Android™ devices and will change its name to Verizon Apps later this year. Verizon also announced the company is working with Chomp to integrate search directly into Verizon Apps, helping customers easily discover mobile apps.

Verizon also noted how the VDC platform has been revamped, allowing developers to bring apps to market quickly, making it easier for customers to experience the thousands of apps available in Verizon Apps.

The company also revealed plans for its Private Applications Store for Business. Launching later this year, the store will offer enterprise and government customers the ability to securely deliver customized and third-party apps to their employees that will improve productivity and provide cost-savings.

The VDC Conference featured other sessions that addressed topics, including the M2M phenomenon, the work of Verizon’s Innovation Centers and how developers can market and merchandise apps in Verizon Apps.

Developers can get updates on the conference by following Verizon Wireless on Twitter @VZWnews and join in live tweeting from the conference using #VDC2011. The 2011 VDC Conference is sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent, Sony Ericsson and Qualcomm. For more information on the VDC, visit http://developer.verizon.com.
