This past weekend, two football teams competed to win the ultimate title at Super Bowl XLVI. A few days before the highly anticipated game, Verizon participated in a different celebratory event in Indianapolis – the 13th annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration (SBGC). The event is an extension of Verizon’s “How Sweet The Sound” gospel choir collaboration and one of the community highlights of the year!
The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is the first and only gospel event sanctioned by the NFL for Super Bowl weekend, a celebration that Verizon has participated in for years. The concert series features Grammy® Award-winning, multi-platinum selling gospel and contemporary Christian and mainstream artists; and marquee NFL players and the NFL Players Choir. It also serves as a fundraiser with a portion of the proceeds benefiting national and local charities.
We were proud not only to participate in the event, but also to give back to the community. HopeLine® from Verizon, through Verizon Wireless, presented a donation for $15,000 to the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) during the event. ICADV works to eliminate domestic violence through the implementation of prevention programs, focused on public education, advocacy for system and societal change, influencing public policy and allocation of resources. This donation will help the organization continue their work to increase awareness of domestic violence and further prevention efforts.
Talent at this year’s SBGC included a special performance by Salvation and Deliverance Church Choir, who took home the grand prize at last year’s Verizon’s How Sweet The Sound celebration. Other performing talent included gospel singer CeCe Winans, well-known rapper Rev Run, Christian vocalist Natalie Grant, three-time Grammy Award winner Donnie McClurkin, Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Bishop Hezekiah Walker, singer Wess Morgan, and R&B singer and actress Fantasia.
Also, Malcolm Jenkins, safety for the New Orleans Saints and a participant in Verizon Wireless’ “Celebrating Your Story: Powering Your Network” initiative to honor Black History Month, was one of several NFL players on hand to celebrate the event. Jenkins is well known for his work in mentoring underserved youth and working to discourage and prevent violence in the New Orleans community.
