CHARLOTTE, NC — Verizon Wireless announced today it will expand the nation’s largest 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network on June 21 in Charlotte, NC including Lincoln, Gaston and Iredell Counties. This expansion will enable customers to have consistent network coverage for using 4G LTE smartphones, tablets and mobile hotspots.

Verizon Wireless initially launched its 4G LTE network in December 2010 with coverage throughout metro Charlotte extending to Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Monroe, Mooresville and Rock Hill. With the planned 4G LTE network expansion this June, residents and travelers in more parts of the city will have access to the nation’s fastest 4G network.

“While our competitors are still focused on getting 4G LTE to major cities, we’ve had our network running in the Charlotte market for a year and half and are now focused on connecting the surrounding areas with high-speed wireless data access,” said Jerry Fountain, president of Verizon Wireless’ Carolinas/Tennessee region. “Our 4G LTE network now covers more than 59 percent of North Carolina’s population.”

Verizon Wireless customers who live in Charlotte or plan to visit during the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this year will have a better wireless experience than wireless users on any other network, according to a new study released today by third-party network evaluator RootMetrics. To effectively manage the increased traffic and ensure an excellent experience for visitors from around the nation during the DNC, Verizon Wireless network engineers have been busy at work enhancing the wireless network coverage and reliability. Following the Convention, residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of in-building repeaters, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and capacity enhancements to the Verizon Wireless network throughout the Queen City, in places like the Time Warner Arena, Bank of America Stadium, NASCAR Hall of Fame, and more than 75 area hotels.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE is a high-speed wireless network utilizing next generation technology that allows customers to experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink in fully loaded network environments. The network is available in more than 258 markets to more than two-thirds of the U.S. population. For more information and a list of current markets, visit www.verizonwireless.com/lte.
