Empowering students to succeed in a technology-driven economy starts by increasing student enthusiasm and engagement in education.

In schools across the country, the power of mobile technology in the classroom can open a world of learning opportunity, strengthen teacher effectiveness, improve test scores and provide a rich learning environment.

Today, with the help of Samsung, SOTI, through Verizon’s education empowerment program, students at Havre de Grace High School in Harford County, Maryland, will participate in biweekly education and training programs designed to empower and prepare them for college and careers.

Twenty students, selected by the school, will participate in a cutting-edge, real-world learning lab led by Verizon Wireless executive teams. Using 4G LTE tablets, they will take part in an app development program and marketing plan competition that includes creating a 30-second commercial for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. They also will learn the six Ps of marketing (people, product, pricing, placement, promotion and PR) and attend workshops covering a wide range of topics relevant to high school students, including creating resumes, job interview skills, managing personal finances, and social media safety, all while using mobile technology to spark innovation, new ideas and solutions.

At the end of the project term in May, students will present the marketing plans to a panel with the top three finalists receiving a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and the first-place winner receiving $5,000 in awards, along with a summer internship at Verizon Wireless.

Being digitally literate is a must in today’s wired world, and mobile technology is helping prepare the next generation of leaders for success in the classroom and beyond.
