WILMINGTON, Del. — The State of Delaware has awarded its first-ever exclusive wireless phone service contract to Bell Atlantic Mobile.

The three-year, 3,000-plus line contract includes analog and digital wireless service and is accessible to School Districts, State Colleges and Universities, Political Subdivisions and Volunteer Fire Companies. The contract features eight price plans to suit the diverse usage patterns of all the State agencies and municipalities.

State contracts are awarded based on a point system where price, coverage, conformance to bid, references and task performance are graded on a percentage basis.

"Our ability to provide 100 percent digital coverage throughout Delaware combined with our competitive pricing and long history with the state put us ahead of the competition," said John Stratton, Bell Atlantic Mobile's regional president.

Bell Atlantic Mobile provides wireless service to other leading organizations in Delaware including the State Police and local police departments.

Through its community relations program "Wireless at Work," Bell Atlantic Mobile has donated wireless products and services to state park rangers and local non-profit organizations including the YMCA over the past several years.

Bell Atlantic Mobile owns and operates the largest wireless network in the East, covering 120,000 square miles, and the largest chain of retail outlets devoted exclusively to wireless voice, data and paging. Based in Bedminster, NJ, Bell Atlantic Mobile has 6.4 million customers and 8,000 employees from Maine to Georgia and, through a separate subsidiary, in the Southwest. Through its "Wireless at Work..." community service program, the company uses its technology to help individuals and communities improve security and emergency communications. Bell Atlantic Mobile's parent, Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE:BEL) is one of the world's largest wireless communications companies, with domestic operations in 25 states and international investments in Mexico, Europe and the Pacific Rim.
