BEDMINSTER, NJ and ROCHESTER, NY — Bell Atlantic Mobile (NYSE: BEL) today announced the completion of its acquisition of the former Frontier Cellular properties, further expanding the company's contiguous East Coast footprint.

Frontier Cellular will become Bell Atlantic Mobile's Upstate New York region, covering Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton and Utica/Rome metropolitan areas, four rural service areas in New York State, and two rural service areas in Pennsylvania. Following a transition period, the Upstate region will begin doing business as Bell Atlantic Mobile.

"By joining the Bell Atlantic Mobile family, Frontier Cellular customers -- consumers and business users alike -- will benefit from being part of one of the largest wireless carriers in the country," said Denny Strigl, president and CEO of Bell Atlantic Mobile. "We also welcome all the dedicated employees who have joined the Bell Atlantic Mobile family."

Tracy Nolan, current president of Frontier Cellular, will continue to lead the Upstate New York operations after the transition is complete. In addition, the headquarters for the Upstate New York service territory will remain in Rochester.

"Both Bell Atlantic Mobile and Frontier Cellular share a commitment to deliver the highest quality service and products to customers. We are excited to combine our local knowledge of the upstate market with the additional resources of a national company in an effort to grow this business and better serve our customers," said Nolan.

According to Nolan, customers will see very few changes in their current relationship. "While the name will change, the same team of dedicated professionals will continue to service Upstate New York. This team is working very hard to make this transition seamless to our customers."

The acquisition represents an addition of more than 450,000 customers, approximately 36,000 square miles of service territory and 5.1 million POPs.

Prior to the acquisition, Frontier Cellular was a joint venture between Bell Atlantic Mobile and Frontier Corporation, which recently completed its merger with Global Crossing.

Next year, Bell Atlantic Mobile will be part of the largest wireless business in the U.S. following the completion of a new national wireless company combining its wireless properties with that of GTE Wireless and Vodafone AirTouch Plc. The new wireless company will serve approximately 20 million customers nationwide and will cover more than 90 percent of the U.S. population and 212 million net POPs.
