ATLANTA, GA — The AirTouch Communications Foundation has donated more than $32,000 to support the much needed on-site program services of the Delowe Village housing complex, located in East Point. The project, designed to provide low-cost, permanent housing to homeless and low-income single parent families, is the result of the Commercial Real Estate Women-Atlanta’s (CREW) Supportive Housing Initiative program. CREW developed Delowe Village to help break the cycle of homelessness and subsidized living. The Village officially opens with a ceremony on May 5, 2000.

CREW’s Supportive Housing Initiative Program helped acquire and rehabilitate the 55-unit facility into affordable and livable apartments. The AirTouch Communications Foundation grant will help to manage the on-site services that are an integral part of the Delowe Village support program. The money will be used to fund critical services designed to promote independent living, such as job and life training for adults, educational and social programming for children, daycare subsidy and an on-site computer center.

"We are excited to team up with organizations like CREW-Atlanta and AirTouch Communications Foundation, that are committed, as we are, to the communities in which we have a presence," said Tim Driscoll, regional president of Verizon Wireless, formerly AirTouch Cellular. "Developing and supporting worthwhile community initiatives and programs like the Delowe Village Housing Complex is outreach that is worth every penny the Foundation contributes," he added.

AirTouch Communications Foundation was established in 1994 by AirTouch Communications, Inc. to support transitional assistance and safe communities efforts in areas in which AirTouch had a presence. In January of 1999, AirTouch Communications merged with Vodafone, a British-based communications company. Just recently, a new coast-to-coast wireless provider was formed by the combination of the U.S. wireless businesses of Bell Atlantic Corp. (NYSE:BEL) and Vodafone AirTouch Plc (LSE:VOD; NYSE:VOD). The new company includes the assets from Bell Atlantic Mobile, AirTouch Cellular, PrimeCo Personal Communications and AirTouch Paging. Verizon Wireless in the largest wireless communications provider in the U.S. with over 16 million wireless voice and data customers and nearly 4 million paging customers. Verizon Wireless will be further strengthened by the addition of the U.S. wireless assets of GTE Corp. (NYSE:GTE) when it completes its merger with Bell Atlantic.
