PORTLAND — In partnership with Call to Protect: Wireless Phones for Domestic Safety, a nationwide campaign to help protect victims of domestic violence, Verizon Wireless and Motorola will donate 50 wireless phones and two years of free airtime to the Multnomah County Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office in Portland. The phones will be distributed to domestic violence prevention organizations in the county.

"This donation will help victims of domestic violence feel safer by providing a link to immediate emergency assistance," said Chiquita Rollins, the county's domestic violence coordinator. "We appreciate the support Verizon Wireless and Motorola are providing to increase public safety."

"Providing wireless service and access to emergency personnel will make victims feel safer," said Eric Papcun, Director of Oregon Sales for Verizon Wireless. "With a wireless phone close by, victims can have greater peace of mind knowing that help is only a phone call away."

As part of the program, the Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office will distribute the phones to organizations assisting victims of domestic violence in Multnomah County. The phones are pre-programmed so victims can reach 9-1-1 and other emergency services with the push of a button when they feel threatened.

A recent survey of women ages 18 to 64 in Multnomah County found that one in seven was abused by their partner in the past year.

The wireless industry is requesting that individuals donate their no longer used wireless phones through the CALL to PROTECT "Donate a Phone" campaign. The donated equipment will be recycled and provided to domestic violence shelters so that even more potential victims can have increased safety and mobility. Used wireless phones can be sent to: CALL to PROTECT, c/o Brightpoint, Inc., 501 Airtech Parkway, Doors 23/24, Plainfield, IN 46168.
