SOUTHFIELD, MI — It's a volunteer effort that would make Metro Detroit native and actor Tim Allen proud, but unlike his hit TV show, this ''Home Improvement'' program featured a cast of thousands.

For the 9th consecutive year, more than 30 Verizon Wireless employees took part in ''Paint The Town,'' an annual neighborhood revitalization project that takes place each summer throughout Southeastern Michigan. Thousands of volunteers from area corporations and organizations pledge their support by helping low income, elderly or disabled homeowners re-paint and improve the quality of their homes, free of charge.

The Verizon Wireless ''Paint The Town'' team raised the ladders and brushed away this Saturday, August 12, at a home located on 2280 Spring Hill in Inkster, Michigan. Inkster's involvement in the program began in 1992, when Councilman Ernest Hendricks spearheaded the efforts to expand on ''Paint The Town's'' success in the city of Detroit.

In addition to painting numerous houses over the years, the Verizon Wireless volunteers have also cleared and repaired gutters, replaced rotten boards and installed windows. ''Our primary goal is to give Verizon employees an opportunity to help those in need,'' says Don Miller, the Verizon Wireless team leader. ''We all take tremendous pride in giving back to the community in which we work and live.''

Verizon Wireless also donated 50 wireless phones and 20 pagers to the ''Paint The Town'' effort, enabling Verizon Wireless and additional painting teams to keep in constant communication.
