COLUMBUS, Ohio — Verizon Wireless will contribute $10,000 for this year's third annual New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix, which benefits The Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. This organization focuses on the issues and causes surrounding family violence and, specifically, children affected by such environments.

The event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23-24, includes Sunday's Family Day at The Classic, a day of fun-filled activities for families including amusement rides, exhibits, games, activities and entertainment, and features the Grand Prix where North America's top horse riders compete for prize money. The Classic is held on the property of Les and Abigail Wexner in suburban New Albany. Mrs. Wexner founded the event in 1998.

Chuck Lewis, regional president of Ohio for Verizon Wireless, said the company's contribution will go directly toward new initiatives and programs to help families in central Ohio that have been adversely affected by violence.

"Verizon Wireless is proud to participate in this very important initiative," said Lewis. "No one should have to experience the pain and fear of domestic violence. The Wexner family and other Columbus supporters have come together to challenge such situations. Their efforts are laudable and heartwarming."

Rapidly becoming one of Columbus' top charity events, The New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix saw contributions in 1998 total $800,000 and $1.1 million last year. More than 800,000 people nationwide will see the 2000 Classic on Fox Sports Network as part of its regular coverage of Grand Prix show jumping. This year's Classic will again feature 30 of North America's top professional riders including former members of the U.S. Olympic, Pan American and World Cup Competition teams.
