IRVINE, CA — In response to the earthquake in El Salvador, Verizon Wireless has donated 150 phones that will provide emergency communications for disaster relief workers, and offer free calls for local victims and their families. Telemovil, a local wireless carrier working with Verizon Wireless, is providing free airtime and distributing the phones this week.

One hundred wireless phones are being distributed to disaster recovery organizations, providing communication that will enable relief workers to order and distribute relief supplies, bring in food for victims, organize search parties, order clean up equipment and secure necessities. Fifty additional phones are being distributed to area shelters, enabling victims and their families to make free local and long distance calls to loved ones.

"The disaster relief in El Salvador requires a tremendous amount of coordination and communication," said Nick Montes, Hispanic Marketing Manager, Verizon Wireless. "Fortunately, our wireless phones are compatible with Telemovil's wireless system in El Salvador. This means we can provide equipment that will immediately meet the communications needs of victims, families and the people who are putting their lives on the line during this crisis."

"Wireless technology is playing a key role in the earthquake recovery effort in El Salvador," said Rafael Tajada, Telemovil. "Whether it's coordinating rescue efforts, or providing basic communications for Salvadorans wishing to call loved ones in the United States and elsewhere, Verizon Wireless' phones, combined with our service, will be able to assist countless people in need."
