HARRISBURG, PA — With the touch of a few buttons on their wireless phone, area residents can now have instant access to local news, sports and weather. WHP-TV 21 has joined with Verizon Wireless to be the local content provider in central Pennsylvania for Verizon Wireless Mobile Web, giving customers access to top local stories, weather, sports and school/business closings and delays.

Mobile Web gives wireless phone users a convenient way to wirelessly access the information they want from the Internet. In addition to dozens of national content providers, area residents will have the added benefit of being able to obtain local information provided by WHP-TV 21's Emmy award-winning Eyewitness News.

" The choice to team up with Verizon Wireless was a natural one," said John F. Feeser III, vice president and general manager of WHP-TV. "We have always been the news leader for Internet content in the Harrisburg area. Verizon Wireless is a leader for wireless Internet access. This partnership gives both companies a unique opportunity to serve our community in a new way."

Roger Tang, regional president for Verizon Wireless-Pennsylvania/West Virginia, said the partnership with WHP brings a vital aspect to the company's wireless Internet service by giving local residents the information that is most important to them.

" Mobile Web users decide what information they want displayed on their phones," Tang explained. " Providing the local news, sports and weather is critical to meeting the needs of the consumer. WHP makes that possible by tailoring the content to this geographic area. This partnership will provide our customers with the most extensive local news and events coverage as well as extensive world wide web content."

WHP-TV was recognized last year as one of the first stations in the country to broadcast a separate newscast specifically for the World Wide Web. WHP-TV is the leader in the Harrisburg television market for web content and was the first local station to include school closings, and streaming video on their site. WHP-TV was also the first station to support Palm Connected Organizer formats, Media Player skins and provide free screen savers. Information at www.whptv.com is updated seven days a week.
