FONTANA, CA — Verizon Wireless, the official wireless carrier for California Speedway, is celebrating its fourth year as a corporate sponsor by offering race fans an opportunity to take advantage of a national springtime promotion that gives new and existing customers 2,000 free weekend air time minutes monthly when they sign up for selected national, regional or local digital rate plans.

Verizon Wireless' sales booths will be conveniently located at Gate 12 in the center of the midway and at Gate 16, located at the west end of the midway for race fans who would like to sign up for new service on selected digital rate plans and receive the free weekend minutes.

Event attendees can also try Mobile Messenger, the company's two-way text messaging service. Mobile Messenger enables Verizon Wireless customers to stay in touch easily and quietly by swapping text messages via their digital wireless handsets, a service which is especially useful to keep in touch with family and friends in a noisy environment such as the California Speedway.

The 2,000 monthly free weekend airtime minutes are available as long as customers stay on the same rate plan, even if they sign a new contract. To receive the 2000 free weekend minutes promotion, Southern California customers must sign up on a one year Digital Plus 200 Plan or above, which start at $19.99 a month for the first three months - $34.99 a month thereafter.

Race fans can also take advantage of Verizon Wireless' "Buy One Get One Free" promotion. Customers who purchase a digital Motorola V2260 phone from Verizon Wireless for $19.99, and sign up for a new one-year local digital plans $34.99 and above, will receive a second Motorola V2260 phone for free. The second phone requires new activation with a one-year service agreement on local digital plans $19.99 and above.

"More than 200,000 race fans are expected to attend the three-day event that begins tomorrow, and our on site staff can recommend the wireless products and calling plans that meet their specific needs," said region president Mike Finley. "As the Official Wireless Carrier for California Speedway, I welcome race fans to visit our booths and find out why Verizon Wireless ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction among wireless users in Los Angeles eight years in a row according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2000 U.S. Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study."

With the inevitability of an exceptionally large number of wireless calls concentrated at the California Speedway and in Fontana this weekend, cellular channels, which easily handle normal call volumes, will see significantly higher usage. As in years past, Verizon Wireless will boost the capacity of its network in the California Speedway and surrounding area to help accommodate the heavy volume of wireless phone calls anticipated from the sizeable crowd expected to attend the three-day event, held April 27-29.

"Wireless phones are everywhere during the race," said Bill Miller, President of California Speedway. "Fans, race crews, drivers, vendors, event managers, and volunteers all use cellular phones to hook up with friends, coordinate meeting locations and conduct business."

"While high-performance automobiles are careening around the track, scores of wireless phone calls will be racing through the air," added Finley. "That is why we have proactively enhanced our service capacity to accommodate the increase in calls, and sustain the reliability of our network during this popular event."
