GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Verizon Wireless today launched Mobile Websm service in its High Country markets: Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Vail and Aspen. This combines the mobility of wireless communications with access to the World Wide Web-based information and enables users to easily personalize these services.
Mobile Web is designed to meet each user's specific personal and business needs, with a simple intuitive format making it easy for the user to customize what they want to see on their handset. By accessing the www.verizonwireless.com web site from their PC or directly from their handset, users may select the Internet-based information they want and prioritize the order in which the information is delivered to the handset, simply by entering their choices on a personal home page they can update whenever they choose. Users can establish text message alerts that will notify them when specific information is available. As an introduction to this service, Verizon Wireless is offering a three-month free trial.
"Today marks a new era in the convergence of wireless and the Internet for four growing communities," said Marni Walden, president for Verizon Wireless in the Mountain Region. "Mobile Web gives users the most complete and affordable way to wirelessly access the Internet, when and where they want it."
Through a series of agreements Verizon Wireless has made with Internet content providers, Mobile Web customers can access web sites ranging from personal finance and shopping, to news and entertainment. By customizing the information desired via the personal home page, users can receive updates on their own stock portfolio and have an alert sent when a particular stock reaches a targeted price point.
"With Mobile Web you can not only check local traffic information, receive your daily horoscope, and keep up with a favorite sports team, but also comparison shop, book airline flights, make restaurant reservations and much more," said Walden. "Mobile Web is valuable, personal and affordable for all types of Internet users, even those who have yet to explore the wired alternatives."
The Yankee Group expects 48 million Web-enabled digital phone users worldwide by 2002 and climbing to 204 million users by 2005.
Verizon Wireless Makes Wireless Internet Access Practical
Mobile Web is competitively priced at $6.95 a month and can be added to any digital service plan, including the company's popular SingleRatesm flat-rate pricing plans which start at $35.00 a month. Mobile Web customers may use their wireless minutes for both voice and Web services. Monthly service also includes 100 message alerts. Additional alerts are 10 cents each. Mobile Web users may also choose from nine different wireless handsets.
User choice is central to the Mobile Web offering. Currently, information from more than 30 Web sites is available.
