SAN RAMON, CA — During 2001, Verizon Wireless will spend more than $170 million to enhance and expand its network to continue to provide superior wireless service in the rapidly growing Greater Bay Area. The expenditure is part of the company's $4 billion investment to improve its extensive, nationwide wireless network this year.

"We've invested heavily in our network over the years to ensure our customers enjoy reliable, high quality wireless service," said Chris Neisinger, executive director of network. "At the end of the day, what matters most to customers is being able to make a wireless call when and where they want to, whether it's an emergency, a business callback or a call for personal convenience."

This year's capital investment continues Verizon Wireless' expansion of geographic coverage in the Greater Bay Area. It will also enable more simultaneous calls on the company's enhanced CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) digital network, improve signal delivery strength, and provide the capacity needed for future services such as next generation wireless data applications.
