BURLINGTON, VT — As part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Verizon Wireless will donate $7,000 to the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

The Vermont Network is launching a statewide educational campaign to raise awareness of the issue of teen dating violence. "Working to end domestic and sexual assault in Vermont is a year-round effort. The considerable support we've received from Verizon Wireless will greatly help us reach out to communities across Vermont and bring attention to the issue of teen dating violence," said Rose Pulliam, coordinator of the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

According to the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, one in five female students report being physically and/or sexually abused, and 40 percent of girls ages 14 to17 report knowing someone their own age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend. This year, the Vermont Network, will focus on the issue of teen dating violence throughout the state through an educational and outreach campaign and various local events. The group is using the funds from Verizon Wireless to produce booklets, posters and information cards, as well as to conduct outreach with teachers, clergy and other community leaders.

The Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is committed to eradicating domestic and sexual violence through advocacy, empowerment, and social change. The organization is comprised of a Montpelier based statewide office and 16 local programs, which provide advocacy comprehensive services to adult and child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Vermont. As the lead sponsor of this year's awareness month campaign, the funds donated by Verizon Wireless will directly support educational and outreach initiatives throughout the state.

Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, is a corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence. Throughout the year, the company supports both local and national organizations that work to end domestic violence. It has implemented programs within the workplace to raise awareness and provide assistance to employees. And through its innovative HopeLineSM Program, Verizon Wireless collects used wireless phones and donates new and refurbished phones to victims of domestic violence through human services and law enforcement agencies.

"We are proud to work for a company that is committed to domestic violence prevention and awareness," said Richard Enright, Regional Director of Engineering in New England. "This year, the company's New England Region decided to make a contribution, supporting a campaign that would directly benefit the future of Vermont - its teens."
