ATHENS, AL — The driver's education class at Athens High School is using a new video and wireless equipment from Verizon Wireless to help students become safer drivers.

"It's a different driving environment today than it was just five years ago," said Judy Davis, Athens High School principal. "To prepare our students as well as we possibly can for all the activity on the road, we need modernized programs. The video and the equipment from Verizon Wireless help us achieve that."

According to Shannon Wilson, Verizon Wireless' Muscle Shoals store manager who has been working closely with the high school on this project, the video package is an educational tool that encourages new drivers to consider their driving aptitudes and educates them about the options for using wireless technologies in vehicles. Verizon Wireless developed the curriculum and video - titled "vehicle Intelligence Quest (vIQSM)" - based on extensive research into this audience's learning habits and the input of a qualified national Advisory Board.

Wilson added that Verizon Wireless has also provided a wireless phone and hands-free headsets to the school for students to use during the driving portion of the course.

"Athens High School has really taken the lead in Alabama regarding driver safety," said Wilson. "Teaching students about wireless safety has become a part of many driver's education programs, but not many have the devices to provide hands-on training. We feel that 'vIQ' is a good introduction to wireless safety for all students in this day and age."

An open classroom presentation of Athens High School's wireless safety program is scheduled for Thursday, November 29, at the beginning of the 9:30 a.m. class. Davis, Wilson, school superintendent Dr. James Irby, driver's education teacher Don Bowling and Athens High School students will be available to discuss the new program.
