TREVOSE, PA — Residents of Bernville Borough in Berks County now live on safer streets, thanks to a donation today of 10 wireless phones and service from Verizon Wireless to the Bernville Borough Crime Watch program. Programmed to dial both 9-1-1 and the local police department, the donated phones will allow crime watch volunteers to summon help quickly and easily in an emergency. Police Chief Richard A. Hicks of the Bernville Police Department accepted the donation from Omar Fall, manager of the Verizon Wireless' Berkshire Mall Communications Store.

"Every day, crime watch volunteers do the important work of protecting neighborhoods in communities such as this," said Fall. "We are pleased to assist Bernville's crime watch efforts by donating our wireless technology." "These phones allow crime watch volunteers to alert police of emergency situations and suspicious activities immediately, providing a higher level of crime prevention for our borough," said Hicks.

Since the inception of the company's HopeLineSM community service program in 1995, Verizon Wireless has donated and recycled hundreds of wireless phones in the Philadelphia Tri-State region, providing essential communication tools to people who need a vital link to emergency services in times of crisis. In addition to crime watch programs, recipients of these phones include survivors of domestic violence and crossing guards.
