BEDMINSTER, NJ — Verizon Wireless, a recognized corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence, today announced the latest HopeLineSM milestone: the collection of more than 150,000 phones in the past seven months since the company extended the program to all of its 1,200-plus Communications Stores across the country. HopeLine collects used wireless handsets to be recycled or sold. Verizon Wireless then donates the proceeds to non-profit domestic violence advocacy organizations or uses proceeds to purchase handsets for victims.
During Wireless Safety Week, May 20-25, Verizon Wireless would like to remind all wireless consumers to drop off their old, no longer used wireless phones at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store across the country. Consumers can also find information on how to donate on the company's Web site at http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
A recent study by Inform, an environmental research organization, says by 2005 there will be at least 200 million cell phones in use across the country and another 500 million older phones may be stockpiled in drawers, closets and elsewhere, waiting to be thrown away.* By contributing these phones to HopeLine, consumers can help millions of domestic violence victims across the country.

For domestic violence victims a wireless phone in hand can often serve as a vital link in times of crisis. We thank all those who have participated in the HopeLine program to date, but there is so much more we can collectively accomplish," said Denny Strigl, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless. "We ask each of our Verizon Wireless customers and other wireless phone customers across the country to use their combined giving power to help us reach new milestones in the effort to help domestic violence victims."
