WALLINGFORD, CT — Verizon Wireless is helping golf fans "make the call" at this week's (June 17 - 23) Cannon Greater Hartford Open (GHO) golf tournament in Cromwell. The nation's leading wireless carrier has installed a mobile cell site at The Player's Club at River Highlands to handle the increased wireless call volume expected throughout the tournament. The "cell on wheels" (COW), a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site, will be positioned to effectively double wireless capacity in the area. The COW has the same call capacity as a freestanding cell site and can handle both voice and wireless data service.

In addition, the company has announced that starting today, Verizon Wireless customers in Connecticut are now able to download entertainment, gaming, information, communications, and productivity applications onto their phones over the air using QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) technology.

For those looking to play with the pros, one of the first applications offered is the popular EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf™ game. BREW technology enables entertainment services such as Mattel, Inc.'s Magic 8 Ball®, and musical ring tones from Vivendi Universal Net USA. Verizon Wireless customers in New England can take advantage of BREW today by purchasing a BREW-capable phone at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores or on the Web where they can also learn more about BREW at http://www.verizonwireless.com/brew.

"With the number of fans converging on such a small area, not to mention media, and the golfers themselves, there is the potential for a significant increase in wireless activity over what we would normally see in this area," said Margaret Salemi, Network director of system performance for Verizon Wireless in the New England Region.

The Verizon Wireless COW has been used during racing events at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire and whenever Verizon Wireless has to rebuild or upgrade an existing cell site. Verizon Wireless installed similar mobile cell sites at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, at the Republican Convention in Philadelphia and at ground zero in New York in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11th.
