IRVINE, CA — Verizon Wireless continued its long-standing commitment to domestic violence prevention in 2002, awarding more than $400,000 in HopeLineSM program grants to agencies addressing domestic violence in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program is a multi-faceted initiative that involves raising awareness and aiding in the prevention of domestic violence through monetary grants, product and service donations, education, events and partnerships with non-profit organizations.

Grants awarded in 2002 support a wide variety of services including play therapy for abused children, bilingual counseling for victims, legal advocacy, counseling for abusers and community outreach and education.

"Domestic violence is an epidemic in our country, affecting millions of women, children and men," said Jan Morris, West Area executive director of public relations, Verizon Wireless. "We're pleased to be able to put our technology and resources to work in the effort to curb domestic violence and make a difference in our communities."

In addition to the grants, the company has committed 2,000 HopeLine wireless phones with one year of prepaid airtime to domestic violence agencies in the 12 Western states; distributed hundreds of free posters to local businesses to help raise awareness of the impact of domestic violence on employees; and collected thousands of used phones to benefit victims of domestic violence.

Through the HopeLine program, used wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any carrier are refurbished, recycled and/or sold. Proceeds are used to award grants to non-profit and public safety agencies engaged in domestic violence prevention and to purchase phones and airtime, which are provided to agencies for use by victims of abuse.

Verizon Wireless also announced comprehensive domestic violence prevention partnerships in 2002 with the states of Arizona and Colorado; the City of San Francisco; and Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo. Each partnership included a donation of wireless phones and airtime; grants for local domestic violence prevention agencies; a HopeLine collection drive of used wireless phones; and public awareness campaigns.
