EAST LANSING, MI — Spartan fans can make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims by donating old wireless phones at the following Michigan State University games: the Saturday, March 1, basketball game at Breslin Student Event Center and at the Saturday, March 8, hockey game at Munn Arena. For each phone collected at the events, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, will donate $1 to MSU Safe Place, an on-campus domestic violence shelter. The drive is being co-sponsored with Michigan State University's Athletic Department.

"This drive is a natural extension of our HopeLineSM program, which uses previously owned wireless phones to help domestic violence victims in threatening situations go about their day-to-day lives with less fear," said Wayne White, president of Verizon Wireless' Michigan Region.

Through its exclusive HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless puts its services and equipment to work to help prevent domestic violence. The company collects used phones to be refurbished or recycled and/or sold. With the funds raised from those sales, Verizon Wireless purchases wireless phones to donate with airtime to victims of domestic and makes monetary contributions to local domestic violence organizations, such as MSU Safe Place.

"Michigan State Athletics is proud to support Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program," said Ron Mason, director of athletics for MSU. "We hope that many of our fans respond to the call to turn in previously-owned wireless phones to help victims of domestic violence and our very own MSU Safe Place."

Michigan State University is the only college in the nation to have an on-campus domestic violence shelter.

"We are thrilled to have the support of Verizon Wireless and the MSU Athletics Department as we work together to make our campus a safer place," said Holly Rosen, director of MSU Safe Place. "Donating used wireless phones will not only financially support MSU's domestic violence program, but it also offers access to wireless phone communication that is desperately needed by those being stalked and victimized in violent relationships. We appreciate the support of Spartan fans in this initiative."

The March 1 collection will start at 1 p.m. The March 8 collection will begin at 6 p.m.
