AUSTIN, TX — As part of a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service in and around Austin, Texas, Verizon Wireless — the nation's leading provider of wireless communications — expanded its network with four new cell towers in the area during the second quarter of 2003.  Verizon Wireless has activated a total of 95 cell towers in Texas since January.

The following cell towers were added to enhance coverage in and around Austin:

  • The Lohmanns Crossing site covers Highway 620 in Lakeway from Lohmanns Crossing Road to Clara Vann Road and strengthens coverage in Lakeway.
  • A cell site was activated at Charles' Place located on FM 2338 west of Sun City near Georgetown, Texas.  The new cell site will improve performance in Sun City, and expand coverage west towards Rocky Hollow.
  • The Serenada site is located on FM 2338 near the Georgetown Airport and will enhance coverage west of Georgetown and east of Sun City.
  • The Thrall site covers the city of Thrall on Highway 79 between Taylor and Thorndale, north of Austin.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $8 billion nationwide in network development during the past two years.  Network expansion in the Austin area is a result of Verizon Wireless' ongoing efforts to enhance its digital network — the largest in the United States — and improve its coverage and call reliability in Texas, said David McCarley, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless' Texas Region.

"The performance of our digital network is a key reason Verizon Wireless is the largest wireless service provider in the nation," McCarley said.  "The activation of new towers in the Austin area demonstrates our commitment to providing the nation's highest-quality wireless network to customers in Texas."

Recent network enhancements in Texas will benefit all customers, especially those on the carrier's Texas Local DigitalChoiceSM plan, which makes every call in Texas a local one with no roaming or long distance charges.
