BEDMINSTER, NJ — Verizon Wireless, the leading U. S. wireless service provider, has announced appointments to its Board of Representatives, and an expansion in Board membership to nine representatives, from seven. Vodafone has designated Arun Sarin, chief executive officer of Vodafone Group Plc, to succeed Sir Christopher Gent on the board, effective July 25, 2003. Sir Christopher Gent has retired. Lowell McAdam, chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless, and Julian Horn-Smith, group chief operating officer of Vodafone Group Plc, have been named to the board, effective July 24, 2003.

Verizon Wireless is jointly owned by Verizon Communications, with a 55% share, and Vodafone, with 45% share. Their partnership agreement dating to the company's formation in April 2000 called for a seven-member governing board, comprising of four representatives from Verizon Communications and three from Vodafone. The partnership agreement has now been amended to include a nine-member board, with five representatives from Verizon Communications and four from Vodafone.

Mr. Sarin was appointed chief executive officer of Vodafone Group Plc on July 30, 2003. He was president of AirTouch Communications Inc. from 1997 to 1999, after which he became chief executive of the US/Asia Pacific Region for Vodafone AirTouch until 2000, continuing as a non-executive director of Vodafone Group Plc until his present appointment.

Mr. McAdam has been chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless since the company's launch, and has served in a number of key executive positions in the wireless and telecom fields, both in the US and internationally.

Mr. Horn-Smith has been group chief operating officer of Vodafone since 2001. He has held various senior management positions in Vodafone since joining the company in 1984, and led the company's international expansion starting in the 1980s.
