Verizon Wireless' HopeLine Program Awards $1.25 Million in Grants, Phones and Airtime to Domestic Violence Prevention Agencies in 12 Western States Including Wyoming

GILLETTE, WY — Verizon Wireless continued its long-standing philanthropic campaign to curb domestic violence in 2003. The company awarded more than $400,000 in HopeLineSM program grants to agencies addressing domestic violence in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Additionally, the company awarded more than 2,000 HopeLine wireless phones with one year of prepaid airtime, an in-kind value of $850,000, to domestic violence agencies in the 12 Western states.
A HopeLine grant awarded in 2003 to the Gillette Abuse Refuge Foundation in Gillette helps fund emergency transportation for domestic violence victims.
Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program is a multi-faceted initiative that involves raising awareness and aiding in the prevention of domestic violence through monetary grants, product and service donations, education and partnerships with non-profit organizations. Its cornerstone is the HopeLine phone-recycling program, which collects and distributes refurbished wireless phones or funds to domestic violence advocacy organizations. The company collected more than 900,000 used wireless phones for recycling in 2003.
"Domestic violence is an epidemic that affects more than 30 percent of American women," said Fran Shammo, West Area president, Verizon Wireless. "We're pleased to be able to put our technology and resources to work in the effort to curb domestic violence and make a difference in our communities."
Verizon Wireless also announced comprehensive domestic violence prevention partnerships in 2003 with the state of Colorado, the City of Seattle, the Utah Attorney General and the Hawaii Attorney General. Partnerships included a donation of wireless phones and airtime; grants for local domestic violence prevention agencies; a HopeLine collection drive of used wireless phones; and public awareness campaigns.
