CEDAR RAPIDS, IA — Wireless consumers can now become text-messaging experts thanks to the TXT ME(ssaging) dictionary created by Verizon Wireless in TXT lingo. The dictionary, which includes words, phrases, symbols and numbers, provides definitions for the language used most often in wireless text messaging.

Text messaging has become a phenomenon in recent years. In 2002, text messaging grew 700 percent in the United States. In 2003, the popularity of text messaging showed even more explosive growth. From September to December 2003, more than 1.5 billion text messages were sent and received by customers on the Verizon Wireless network alone.

"Text messaging is becoming more prevalent as consumers discover its ease of use," said Viki L. Radden, president — Verizon Wireless' Great Plains Region. "This dictionary gives consumers all of the shortcuts to becoming a text messaging expert."

Text messaging is a cost-effective way to communicate and is most popular with wireless customers age 30 and under. The wireless phone user can save minutes by sending a text message versus placing a call. Text messaging bundles are available through Verizon Wireless beginning at $2.99 per month for 100 messages.

As text messaging continues to increase in popularity, new words, phrases and symbols are popping up in everyday speech, as well as in text messaging. Many people are challenged to keep up with this unique "language." Customers interested in receiving a free copy of TXT ME(ssaging) may pick up the dictionary, while supplies last, at the Verizon Wireless Communications Stores located at 151 Collins Road N.E. and in Lindale Mall.

Examples from TXT ME(ssaging) include:

:-D -- laughing
oio -- someone is listening
143 -- I love you
bfo -- blinding flash of obvious
cyhmn -- can you hear me now?
ilbcnu -- I'll be seein' you
