MCKINNEY, TX — Verizon Wireless, the nation's leading wireless provider, continued to enhance its digital network in Texas by activating two new cell sites in the McKinney area in the first quarter of 2004. The cell site expansion is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services, including two-way text messaging, picture messaging and Internet access. Verizon Wireless invested more than $194 million in its Texas network in 2003.

"Over the last three years, Verizon Wireless has invested roughly one billion dollars every 90 days -- more than $12 billion -- in its nationwide network, offering customers access to the most extensive wireless voice and data network in the United States," said David McCarley, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless in Texas. "In Texas alone, we've added 50 new cell sites in the first 100 days of 2004."

As part of its commitment to provide customers with the highest quality of service, Verizon Wireless activated the following cell sites to enhance wireless coverage in McKinney:

  • A new cell site located northwest of Lake Lavon provides added coverage and capacity to the area between the cities of Princeton, McKinney and Fairview. It also provides coverage to Lake Lavon and Highway 380 between Princeton and McKinney.
  • Located south of McKinney and northwest of Allen, this cell site provides coverage to the city of Fairview and the area between Highway 75 and Lake Lavon.

In addition to providing the nation's largest and highest-quality digital network, Verizon Wireless offers NationalAccess, a nationwide high-speed wireless data network, providing fast wireless Internet service with bursts up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps). NationalAccess gives users full Internet access, intranet access and traditional e-mail functionality on their laptop at unprecedented speeds for wireless access. Users can expect average speeds between 40 and 60 kbps, significantly higher than speeds being produced by competing technologies and comparable to, if not faster than, using dial-up Internet service.

In select markets, Verizon Wireless also offers BroadbandAccess, which provides average transfer speeds of 300-500 kbps. Verizon Wireless will roll out BroadbandAccess in key Texas cities in 2004 and 2005.
