BEDMINSTER, NJ — The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB), the nation's leading maternal and child health coalition, has selected Verizon Wireless as a "Workplace Model of Excellence." The prestigious designation, which is given to a select group of U.S. companies each year, recognizes the unique ways Verizon Wireless supports employee families in its workplace.

Verizon Wireless will be honored at HMHB's Annual Awards Luncheon being held today on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The event, entitled, "Promoting the Best from the Beginning," will honor dignitaries whose research, support and education have increased awareness of health issues for families. First Lady Laura Bush will be the honorary chair of the event.

Verizon Wireless is being recognized for the unique way it uses technology to promote family health education for its employees. Through teleconferencing and a company intranet system, working parents at Verizon Wireless have access to critical information on fatherhood, maternal and child health, premature births, stress management, prenatal nutrition and other important issues for family well being. Employees can participate in a dialogue with their medical insurance plan provider and Employee Assistance professionals as well physicians from the March of Dimes.

"Workplace support is increasingly important for families to maximize their chances of achieving good health," said Anita Boles, executive director of HMHB. "We salute Verizon Wireless for setting new standards in the workplace by making it possible for parents to assure that their children get a healthy start."

"Verizon Wireless is honored to be selected as a 'Workplace Model of Excellence' by The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition," said Martha Delehanty, vice president of human resources at Verizon Wireless. "This recognition underscores Verizon Wireless' long term commitment to establishing an educational environment that supports the health and well-being of our employees and their family members."

Actress, author and producer Marlo Thomas will also appear at the luncheon to accept an HMHB Special Impact Award. Joining the famed television star will be Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) and Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), who will receive top honors for their leadership in promoting maternal and child health.
