ORANGEBURG, NY — The Hispanic Counseling Center in Hempstead, NY, is one of three nonprofit organizations to benefit from $30,000 in grants announced today by Verizon Wireless to mark October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The grants, $10,000 each, were awarded to fund new or expanded domestic violence prevention and education programs in the New York Metro area and were made possible through the company's HopeLinesm wireless phone recycling program.

Grant winners were selected from over 70 applications received from nonprofit domestic violence prevention organizations in New York and New Jersey this summer in response to a request for grant proposals. Other award recipients are The Northern Westchester Shelter in Pleasantville, NY, and The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills in New Jersey.

The Hispanic Counseling Center's HopeLine grant will support a 12-week program to provide bilingual/bicultural support and recovery services to women and children affected by domestic violence, and education and prevention services to batterers.

"Like many not-for-profits, we find that both public and private funding is scarce, which can put many programs at risk," said Gladys Serrano, executive director of the Hispanic Counseling Center. "This grant is very timely and will allow us to serve more clients."

Awards were funded by proceeds from the Verizon Wireless HopeLine phone recycling program through which the company collects no longer used wireless phones to be refurbished, recycled or sold to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from phone recycling in the New York Metro area were used to seed the three $10,000 grants. During the past two years, Verizon Wireless has awarded six grants in New York and New Jersey, totaling $60,000, in addition to numerous phone and cash donations.

"All the community-minded citizens who turned in no longer used wireless phones at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and companies that hosted recycling drives on their premises have helped to make these grants possible," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "Clearly, the HopeLine phone recycling program is working to support domestic violence prevention and help women re-build their lives."

As a result of HopeLine and related phone recycling programs the company has organized since 1995, Verizon Wireless has collected more than two million no longer used wireless phones for the benefit of domestic violence victims and advocacy groups, including more than 90,000 wireless handsets in the New York Metro area. Donations are accepted at all 71 Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the New York Metro area, and at 1,200 company retail locations across the country. All wireless phone models, batteries and chargers from any carrier are accepted. For store locations and additional information, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
