OVERLAND PARK, KS — Continuing to build on its strategy to provide businesses and individual customers superior voice and data applications on the most reliable network in the United States, Verizon Wireless announced today it has expanded its EV-DO network in the Kansas/Missouri Region to include Lawrence, Leavenworth, western Johnson County, western Wyandotte County, and northeast, east and southeast Kansas City, Mo.

"Verizon Wireless is continually working to upgrade our network to offer the best products and services," said Mark Crumpton, president—Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. "BroadbandAccess is our premier data service and we have received great feedback from Kansas Citians about it since our initial launch in the fall of last year. Now we are proud to provide expanded access of this great tool in the Kansas/Missouri area."

Powered by an Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network, BroadbandAccess commercial service is the fastest wide-area wireless Internet access service available in the nation, with typical user download speeds of 300—500 kilobits per second (kbps).

BroadbandAccess provides mobile workers full access to their corporate information, just as if they were attached via a high-speed wired connection, but with the freedom of true mobility. Developed with a range of users in mind, BroadbandAccess enables large enterprises, small-medium businesses and mobile professionals to conduct business anytime, anywhere in the BroadbandAccess coverage area via a secure, true high-speed data connection.

These speeds are ideal for downloading files, and accessing email and the Internet. With data transmission bursts up to above 2 Megabits per second (Mbps), BroadbandAccess customers could download a 1 Megabyte email attachment (for example, a small PowerPoint presentation or a large PDF file), or receive three digital pictures (each 400 x 600 pixels) in less than 20 seconds.

Verizon Wireless first introduced BroadbandAccess in the Kansas City area in September 2004. At launch, Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess coverage included the business districts of Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., spanning to I-435 on the east and to I-635/I-35 on the west; reaching as far north as the Kansas City International Airport and as far south as Overland Park.

The recent upgrades to Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess network will make available BroadbandAccess in the following additional locations:

  • Lawrence — Students at the University of Kansas and Lawrence residents now have access to BroadbandAccess on campus, and in downtown Lawrence.
  • Leavenworth — BroadbandAccess has been added in and around the city.
  • Western Johnson County — Residents in western Johnson County will notice BroadbandAccess coverage along Highway 7.
  • Western Wyandotte County — NASCAR fans and music enthusiasts will enjoy added coverage in western Wyandotte County, which includes the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and the Kansas Speedway, as well as along Interstate 435 from Interstate 70 to Interstate 29.
  • Northeast Kansas City, Mo. — BroadbandAccess has been added to include the cities of Gladstone, Liberty, Sugar Creek and Excelsior Springs.
  • East and southeast Kansas City, Mo. — BroadbandAccess coverage has been expanded to include areas along Interstate 70 east of the Sports Complex to Odessa, and the cities of Independence, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Bates City, Oak Grove, Odessa, Raytown, Grandview, Belton, Harrisonville, Greenwood and Lee's Summit.
  • Platte City — BroadbandAccess customers now will be able to this service in and around Platte City.

In addition to its ongoing annual capital investment program to build network capacity and coverage, Verizon Wireless expects to invest $1 billion through 2005 to deploy its EV-DO technology nationally. For the past four years, Verizon Wireless has committed $4 billion annually to its capital investment program.

"This service gives our enterprise customers two key advantages in wireless communication-speed and mobility," said Crumpton. "With that comes an increase in productivity and bottom-line business benefits-crucial advantages in today's competitive business environment."

Because BroadbandAccess is backward compatible-a distinct advantage of using CDMA technology-customers who travel outside a BroadbandAccess coverage area with an EV-DO device will seamlessly switch to Verizon Wireless' existing NationalAccess network, based on 1xRTT technology.

Working with virtual private network (VPN) connections, business customers can use BroadbandAccess as an extension of their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet, allowing them to work from any location within the BroadbandAccess coverage area, as if they were in the office. BroadbandAccess is ideal for downloading files and business-critical information residing behind corporate firewalls and for accessing email, intranets and the Internet. BroadbandAccess's CDMA EV-DO technology has its own data protection and authentication and is designed to work with a business's existing IT infrastructure and security solutions.

BroadbandAccess customers can manage their remote access needs with VZAccess Manager, a new customizable tool included with the PC 5220 card that simplifies wireless remote access allowing users to stay connected to business-critical email, company databases, files and the Internet while mobile.

BroadbandAccess service is priced at $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use with a one- or two-year customer agreement. For a limited time, Verizon Wireless customers with unlimited use data plans can buy the BroadbandAccess PC 5220 card for $49.99 with a two-year customer agreement or $99.99 with a one-year customer agreement after $150 rebate.
