INDIANAPOLIS, IN — To mark the 10-year anniversary of Verizon Wireless' Hopeline® program, the company today announced a $5,000 gift to Coburn Place Safe Haven in Indianapolis. Started in 1996, Coburn Place provides safe, affordable housing and supportive services to women and children who are forced to leave their homes because of abusive situations.

The organization will use the donation to help fund Sisters in Stitches, an in-house training program that helps women become self-sufficient by teaching them useful sewing skills and marketable job skills. The items created by project participants are sold to the public through a variety of venues and fundraisers. Proceeds from the sale are reinvested in the Sisters in Stitches program.

"We are so grateful to Verizon Wireless for its generous donation, which is helping to keep Sisters in Stitches up and running," said Lianne Somerville, Coburn Place executive director. "Through this program, participants learn important skills that help them become self-sufficient and then to ultimately reclaim their lives from domestic abuse."

Verizon Wireless created its award-winning HopeLine program to put wireless products and services to work to combat domestic violence and raise awareness of the issue. Through HopeLine, the company collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment from any vendor. Most of the donated phones and equipment are refurbished and sold with proceeds going to support domestic violence awareness and prevention programs. Any remaining phones are recycled in an environmentally friendly way.

In 2004, consumers nationwide donated three-quarters of a million phones to HopeLine, up more than 35 percent from the previous year, and bringing the total to nearly two million since the program's national phone collection and recycling efforts began in 2001.

"HopeLine has grown significantly over the past decade and along the way has helped so many survivors-keeping them safe and helping them rebuild their lives," said Greg Haller, president—Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. "We're thankful to our customers and the countless other consumers, organizations and businesses for participating in the program and helping make possible gifts like this to Coburn Place."

Wireless phones and equipment can be donated to the HopeLine program at the following Indianapolis-area locations:

  • 6633 E. 82nd St. (Castleton)
  • 1950-17 E. Greyhound Pass, B-11 (Carmel)
  • 3269 W. 86th St. A-1 (College Park)
  • 8940 U.S. 31 South (Greenwood)
