ALPHARETTA, GA — Verizon Wireless, the nation's most reliable wireless network, today announced the expansion of their Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) third generation (3G) wide-area network to ten additional metro Atlanta locations. In addition, the company announced the launch of its 3G EV-DO network and V CAST, the nation's first 3G wireless multimedia service for consumers, in Athens, Georgia. This announcement exemplifies Verizon Wireless' commitment to building out network capacity and coverage throughout the state of Georgia.

Verizon Wireless customers in the following metro-Atlanta cities now have access to the same high speed benefits of BroadbandAccess and V CAST:

  • Buford
  • Conyers
  • Fayetteville
  • Kennesaw
  • Lithia Springs
  • Lithonia
  • Morrow
  • Newnan
  • Peachtree City
  • Snellville

Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service delivers the fastest commercially available high-speed wide-area wireless Internet access service in the nation, with typical user speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second (kbps).

BroadbandAccess provides mobile workers full access to their corporate information, just as if they were attached via a high-speed wired connection, but with the freedom of true mobility. Developed with a range of users in mind, BroadbandAccess allows large enterprises, small-medium businesses and mobile professionals to conduct business anytime, anywhere in the BroadbandAccess coverage area via a secure, reliable, true high-speed data connection. Because EV-DO technology is backward compatible — a distinct advantage to the company's CDMA technology — customers who travel outside a BroadbandAccess coverage area with an EV-DO device will seamlessly switch to Verizon Wireless' existing NationalAccess service, which runs on the company's 1xRTT network.

Working with virtual private network (VPN) connections, business customers can use BroadbandAccess as an extension of their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet, allowing them to work from any location within the BroadbandAccess coverage area, as if they were in the office. BroadbandAccess' EV-DO technology has its own data protection and authentication and is designed to work with a business' existing IT infrastructure and security solutions.

BroadbandAccess service is priced at $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use with a one- or two-year customer agreement. Verizon Wireless customers with unlimited use data plans can buy the BroadbandAccess PC 5220 card for $99.99 after $150 rebate with a two-year customer agreement.

V CAST is the nation's first and only third-generation (3G) wireless multimedia service for consumers. V CAST runs on the Verizon Wireless broadband EV-DO 3G network and delivers crystal clear short content on-demand, 3D games and music videos to wireless phones from leading and respected news and entertainment sources and other innovative content providers. Now, customers outside metro Atlanta will be able to use new mobile devices to access V CAST's video on-demand service, viewing current news, weather, sports and entertainment programming. They will also be able to download and play cutting-edge three-dimensional games on powerful new handsets. Customers will be able to watch music videos and short programs specifically designed for mobile phones and other video applications on their handsets.

For $15.00 monthly access added to their Verizon Wireless calling plan, Verizon Wireless customers can purchase the V CAST VPak which includes unlimited access to a wide array of more than 300 regularly updated video clips from leading news, sports, weather and entertainment content providers. There are no airtime charges to download, stream or watch V CAST content. Unlimited basic short content is included, but application download fees still apply for 3D games, premium short content, and all other Get It Now® applications. Verizon Wireless V CAST customers also receive monthly access and unlimited browsing on Verizon Wireless' Mobile Web 2.0SM news and information service. For a limited time, customers who sign up for V CAST receive one month of service free.

"The expansion of the 3G EV-DO network with BroadbandAccess and V CAST outside metro Atlanta and into Athens provides Verizon Wireless customers the latest and greatest in wireless data technology, enabling them to stay connected, informed and entertained via their wireless phone, 24 hours a day seven days a week," said Jim McGean, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "Now wireless users don't have to go to a coffee house to conduct their business."

V CAST and BroadbandAccess run on Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network, which began commercial operation in October 2003 in San Diego and Washington, D.C and is now the nation's largest and fastest wireless broadband network. Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network initially made its commercial debut with BroadbandAccess wireless Internet access service for business customers and mobile professionals. The company launched its V CAST wireless broadband multimedia service in February 2005.

Verizon Wireless is committed to delivering the best, most reliable network. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $110-million to date in 2005 to maintain and expand its wireless network in Georgia and Alabama.
