HAMPTON ROADS, VA — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents, Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network*, today announced it has doubled capacity for its wireless customers traveling on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Coverage and capacity have been increased both on the bridge and above-water roadways and in both tunnel sections.

Nearly 5 million vehicles traverse the bridge-tunnel each year, where traffic increases by as much as 50 percent during the summer months.

The 17-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel crosses over and under open waters where the Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, providing a direct link between Norfolk /Virginia Beach and Virginia's Eastern Shore on the Delmarva Peninsula.

"While our Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel capacity increase won't have an impact on traffic patterns or weather forecasts, there's one thing travelers can count on: Verizon Wireless customers will continue to enjoy the best, most reliable wireless network in the business," said Patrick Devlin, Verizon Wireless regional president.

This network expansion is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year (more than $1 billion every 90 days) to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services. Verizon Wireless is committed to offering customers the most reliable service available in the nation, including wireless data services such as Picture and TXT Messaging.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the second quarter of 2005 as the company added an industry record of 1.9 million net new customers, and maintained its position as the nation's wireless leader in customer loyalty, setting an industry record for customer retention and the lowest customer turnover rate, as reported by the largest wireless providers.

*The company's 'most reliable network' claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspired the "can you hear me now" national advertising campaign. If you are interested in setting up an interview or ride-along test drive with your local Verizon Wireless test man or woman, please contact John Johnson at 240-568-1429.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), record gas prices have not kept motorists off the roads. The 2005 summer travel season is expected to be the nation's busiest summer travel vacation period ever, with 328 million leisure trips (trips for recreation of at least 50 miles) expected to occur during the summer of 2005 — an increase of 2.3 percent from the previous summer. Beach resorts top the list of preferred destinations with 26 percent of travel volume.
