ATLANTA, GA — In anticipation of the crowds expected in Atlanta this weekend, Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable network, has expanded its downtown network capacity around the Georgia World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome to handle the increase in wireless activity. T.D. Jakes' Megafest, Billboard/AURN R&B Hip-Hop Conference, the National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Jesse Jackson's Keep the Vote Alive anniversary march are all scheduled in Atlanta this weekend and the expected overflow from Wednesday through Sunday has Atlanta police sounding a major traffic alert for pedestrians and motorists traveling in and around Atlanta. Tens of thousands of people are expected to descend upon Atlanta and that traffic will also affect wireless network usage.

"Wireless service is going to be in high demand this weekend and Verizon Wireless is committed to providing the best wireless service in Georgia," said Jim McGean, Verizon Wireless Georgia/Alabama region president. "With so many people converging on Atlanta, not to mention media, public safety officers and personnel, there is a significant increase in wireless activity over normal usage. People rely on their wireless phones to locate friends, make plans and call for help if there is an emergency. The enhanced coverage gives us the ability to make sure we have enough capacity to handle those calls and provide the quality of service our customers expect."

The company's long tradition of investment in its network, including stringent quality testing, is rooted in Verizon Wireless' commitment to offer the most reliable wireless service. Known for its award winning network, Verizon Wireless has regularly invested more than $4 billion nationally each year since its inception -- and more than $5 billion last year alone -- to expand and upgrade its nationwide wireless network. In Georgia alone to date in 2005, Verizon Wireless has invested over $125 million in network enhancements.
