ORANGEBURG, NY — Hundreds of children who call New York City family shelters their homes will go back to school this year with fond memories of a day spent at Yankee Stadium, thanks to Verizon Wireless.

The official wireless provider of the New York Yankees, Verizon Wireless donated more than 200 of the company's tickets to Safe Horizon and The Hispanic Committee for Children and Families, to distribute to families affected by domestic violence.

"To give these children just a few hours with their moms to enjoy a game and be regular kids is a great gift," said Allegra Perhaes, vice president of Safe Horizon's domestic violence shelters. "We can provide the children with a bed and a meal, but a day at Yankee Stadium gives them something more, it gives them something good to remember."

Domestic violence prevention and education is Verizon Wireless' chief community focus. Verizon Wireless created its HopeLine® program 10 years ago to put the company's wireless products and services to work to help victims of domestic violence enhance their safety. In addition to free phones, service and voice mailboxes for victims, HopeLine includes funding for non-profit domestic violence organizations; community and corporate awareness initiatives; and a bilingual "Invest in Yourself" program designed to help prepare survivors to re-enter the workforce.

"At Verizon Wireless, we provide survivors with a number of tools through our HopeLine programs, but we wanted to do something directly for the children," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "In the past five years, over 1,000 kids and their families have been guests of Verizon Wireless. We hope that in some small way, we've made a difference in their lives."
