SAN ANTONIO, TX — Verizon Wireless emergency response teams continue to make progress reestablishing communications to areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina. To support the evacuees being sent to San Antonio to escape the disaster, Verizon Wireless is providing wireless phones to help support the staff at local shelters and to provide wireless communications for the victims.

In addition, area Verizon Wireless stores are providing free local and long-distance calls, battery charging and technical support to anyone in need of these services. To find their nearest Verizon Wireless store, customers can visit Verizon Wireless online at www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/storelocator/index.jsp.

Wireless service continues to improve in Baton Rouge, Pensacola, Mobile, and in surrounding areas where technicians are now able to move in and begin restoring the network. However, efforts to restore service to New Orleans and surrounding area continue to be hampered by widespread flooding in the area. Verizon Wireless will continue to work diligently to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.

While we continue working to restore service in all areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina, Verizon Wireless encourages customers to communicate through TXT Messaging since this service uses less bandwidth than voice calls and has a higher chance of getting through. Customers who evacuated the area may be able to place calls but not receive calls at this time. Mobile-to-mobile calling may also be available to some customers.
