PORTAGE, MI — Verizon Wireless officially opened its first stores in the Kalamazoo area today during a grand opening celebration at one of the new locations at 5218 S. Westnedge in Portage. To mark the occasion, the company presented a $5,000 donation to the YWCA of Kalamazoo for its programming to help survivors of domestic violence and their families.
The second location is within the Circuit City at 6026 S. Westnedge, also in Portage. Verizon Wireless now has 68 company-owned stores and kiosks in Michigan. Each offers an expansive array of wireless products and services, including the latest handsets and accessories.
With the opening of these new locations, Verizon Wireless began offering service in the Kalamazoo market. In August 2005, the company completed the purchase of certain spectrum licenses and operating assets from Leap Wireless International, Inc. With the deal, Verizon Wireless acquired Leap Wireless' operations and customers in Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Flint, Mich. Those customers used Leap's Cricket® branded service.

Verizon Wireless' donation to the YWCA signifies its interest in contributing to the communities that support it, and the company's own corporate commitment to preventing and raising awareness of domestic violence.
Graham added, "The YWCA assists so many domestic violence victims and their families. It is heartwarming to see how quickly Verizon Wireless is becoming an integral part of our community."
