PORTAGE, MI — Verizon Wireless officially opened its first stores in the Kalamazoo area today during a grand opening celebration at one of the new locations at 5218 S. Westnedge in Portage. To mark the occasion, the company presented a $5,000 donation to the YWCA of Kalamazoo for its programming to help survivors of domestic violence and their families.

The second location is within the Circuit City at 6026 S. Westnedge, also in Portage. Verizon Wireless now has 68 company-owned stores and kiosks in Michigan. Each offers an expansive array of wireless products and services, including the latest handsets and accessories.

With the opening of these new locations, Verizon Wireless began offering service in the Kalamazoo market. In August 2005, the company completed the purchase of certain spectrum licenses and operating assets from Leap Wireless International, Inc. With the deal, Verizon Wireless acquired Leap Wireless' operations and customers in Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Flint, Mich. Those customers used Leap's Cricket® branded service.

"Our expansion into the Kalamazoo area has been greatly anticipated by Verizon Wireless and area residents, alike," said Greg Haller, president—Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. "We're excited to introduce wireless phone users in greater Kalamazoo to the nation's most reliable network, and we are committed to providing our customers with an accessible, knowledgeable sales staff who will provide superior service."

"We're thrilled to welcome Verizon Wireless to the area," said Portage Mayor James Graham who attended the grand opening. "We appreciate the company's commitment to the community with its generous donation to the YWCA."

Verizon Wireless' donation to the YWCA signifies its interest in contributing to the communities that support it, and the company's own corporate commitment to preventing and raising awareness of domestic violence.

Graham added, "The YWCA assists so many domestic violence victims and their families. It is heartwarming to see how quickly Verizon Wireless is becoming an integral part of our community."

Managed by Tara Johnson, the new Verizon Wireless store is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.—8 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.—5 p.m. The store's phone number is 269-342-2572.

The company's store in the Circuit City is managed by Steve Sypniewski. It is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. —9 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.—7 p.m. The store's phone number is 269-323-0191.
