IRVINE, CA — Verizon Wireless announced today it invested $740 million in 2005 to expand and enhance its wireless voice and data network in California. The project, which began in January of 2005, broadened the company's voice network and, increased the network's call capacity by 25% in California to keep up with consumer demand for wireless service. The project also included adding and expanding consumer- and business-focused technologies, such as V CAST and BroadbandAccess, as part of a broadband network expansion that now includes markets throughout southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sacramento region.
Verizon Wireless' California network investment, which totals nearly $4 billion since 2000, has been key to maintaining customer loyalty. "It's no secret why Verizon Wireless continues to lead the industry in customer loyalty," said John Palmer, Verizon Wireless region president. "We focus on what consumers care about most --- making a call and not having that call dropped --- which is why the Verizon Wireless network is the most reliable in the United States".
Highlights of network upgrades in southern California for 2005 include:
- Installation of V CAST technology for consumers. V CAST is the nation's first 3G wireless broadband multimedia service for consumers, featuring 300 daily updated video clips from a wide variety of news, entertainment, weather and sports content providers that can be downloaded or streamed to V CAST-capable cell phones. V CAST video clips, typically between one to five minutes in length, are delivered over the company's BroadbandAccess network, the nation's largest high-speed wireless broadband network. Available in 181 markets, BroadbandAccess covers more than 150 million people in the United States.
- Greater coverage and call capacity on the campus of the University of Southern California and in the surrounding area from Normandie to the 110 Freeway, and from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to Adams Boulevard.
- Additional coverage along Highway 71 in San Bernardino County, extending from Big League Dreams Sports Park to the Chino Hills Parkway, while providing improved coverage and call capacity for residents living near Danbury Park
- New coverage near Lake Poway and Poway Park in the city of Poway, extending the network's reach to the nearby residential areas.
- Expanded coverage in and around North Hollywood Park in Studio City, providing additional coverage and call capacity for motorists on the busy 101, 170 and 134 freeway interchange and in surrounding neighborhoods.

Test Man/Woman Ride-Along Program
