BEDMINSTER, NJ — Verizon Wireless, owner of the nation's most reliable wireless network, announced today that Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technical officer (CTO), has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Lynch was honored at the IEEE Philadelphia Section Awards Banquet on April 1.

The grade of Fellow recognizes an IEEE member with outstanding and extraordinary accomplishments in the field of engineering and electronics, and is conferred only by invitation of the Board of Directors. IEEE Fellows worldwide have distinguished themselves in their careers and have made important individual contributions to their profession.

Lynch was named an IEEE Fellow for his leadership in advancing wireless voice and data technologies. He has been at the forefront of advocating and creating wireless data networks and services. Under his leadership, Verizon Wireless built the nation's most reliable wireless network, and launched the nation's first wireless broadband wide-area network.

"I am honored to be recognized by IEEE and to lead Verizon Wireless' ongoing efforts to offer customers the best wireless experience available," said Lynch. "Providing top-quality service on the nation's most reliable wireless network is at the core of everything we do. Our relentless pursuit of excellence drives us to deploy the most advanced wireless technologies available."

Lynch's vision also helped Verizon Wireless:

  • Build the largest Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network -- the original wireless data technology widely deployed in the public safety arena -- ultimately paving the way for mass-market wireless data.
  • Launch the first commercial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) service, the most spectrum-efficient wireless digital technology platform.
  • Introduce lifestyle-changing services, including the first wide-area mobile broadband access via laptops and PDAs; TXT and Picture Messaging; V CAST Music, the most comprehensive over-the-air wireless music download service, and turn-by-turn navigation on cell phones.

Lynch, a graduate of Lowell Technological Institute (now UMass) where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering, has been awarded a number of patents and is a frequent guest lecturer in academia and industry on wireless technology and trends.
