ORANGEBURG, NY — In recognition of Verizon Wireless' commitment to Long Island's business and civic communities, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce recently presented the company with its 2006 Long Island Business Best Award of Excellence.

"Verizon Wireless earned this recognition for its winning spirit and its dedication to improving the quality of life in the region," said James Kelly, chairman of the board for the Huntington Township Chamber. "The company's contribution to Long Island's overall economic development clearly makes it a leader within the Long Island business community."

Verizon Wireless employs nearly 300 people in Nassau and Suffolk counties at a network switching center in Farmingdale and 23 retail locations including its newest Communications Store at 350 Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station.

The company has a long history of community support on Long Island and throughout the New York Metro area, and is a recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue. Through its HopeLine® program, the company collects wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider and manufacturer, and then refurbishes the phones or recycles them in an environmentally-friendly way. Proceeds from the HopeLine program benefit victims of domestic violence and non-profit advocacy agencies by providing essential communication tools-- wireless phones and services-- and financial grants. Local HopeLine recipients include the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence which was awarded a $10,000 HopeLine Grant to purchase a mini-van for its Safe Harbor Shelter.

"This award recognizes our position as Long Island's wireless service provider of choice," said Charles Hand, president of the company's New York Metro Region. "Verizon Wireless continues to efficiently invest in network enhancements to deliver what Long Island customers want the most: the best, most reliable wireless voice and data network."

Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess data network is the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the U.S. BroadbandAccess service, now available to 70 percent of the Suffolk County population and nearly 90 percent of Nassau residents, provides customers with high-speed wireless Internet access, access to corporate intranets and e-mail via laptop computers and personal digital assistants.
