LAS VEGAS, NV — At MAX, Adobe's annual user conference, Verizon Wireless, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) and QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today announced the availability of Adobe® Flash® LiteTM technology via the Verizon Wireless network. Flash Lite for BREW® facilitates Flash content to run on Verizon Wireless' Get It Now®-enabled phones and enables over-the-air distribution, giving Verizon Wireless customers the ability to purchase applications and automatically "Flash enable" their phones. The alliance will provide developers in North America a new way to create and commercialize rich mobile applications and content that deliver exceptional mobile experiences to millions of Verizon Wireless customers.
Flash Lite for BREW is currently available on four Get It Now-enabled Verizon Wireless handsets, including The V (LG VX9800), Motorola Razr V3c and Motorola V3m and Samsung SCH-a950. The companies expect Flash Lite to be available on additional handsets in the coming weeks. Verizon Wireless customers can purchase engaging Flash Lite for BREW content and applications directly on their phones in Verizon Wireless' Get It Now virtual store.
Ray Taylor, director of product development for Verizon Wireless, said, "Verizon Wireless' commitment to improving the mobile experiences of our customers while providing value to our developer and handset partners is an ongoing priority. By combining Flash Lite with the BREW solution which enables our Get It Now service, developers have a new way to easily design and market rich, interactive content to our customers which includes everything from screensavers and games to comics and animation."
The Verizon Wireless and Adobe relationship leverages the Flash ecosystem by offering maximum flexibility to the mobile developer community to create content including Flash applications, screensavers and casual games for the BREW solution. Flash Lite for BREW utilizes the key features and benefits of the Flash authoring tool and the BREW platform, providing developers with a clear path to market for content distribution.
"As the first carrier to pass the quarterly data revenue benchmark of $1 billion, Verizon Wireless is already the North American leader," said Gary Kovacs, vice president of product management and marketing, Mobile and Device Solutions at Adobe. "Its inclusion of Flash Lite is yet another powerful example of how Verizon Wireless is pioneering the industry by continually enhancing the mobile content experience for developers and consumers alike."
"Both BREW and Adobe Flash are successful, industry-proven solutions and combining their capabilities into Flash Lite for BREW will be a boon to Flash developers who can take advantage of the BREW business model to monetize their mobile content," said Mitch Oliver, vice president of solutions and marketing for QUALCOMM Internet Services. "Verizon Wireless has long been at the forefront of offering the latest technologies that benefit its subscribers, and its decision to offer Flash Lite for BREW is a great addition."
Adobe also announced today that a preview release of the Flash Lite 2.1 Update to Flash® Professional 8 is available for free download on Adobe Labs http://labs.adobe.com/ wiki/index.php/Flash_Lite_2.1_Authoring, enabling developers to create, preview and test Flash Lite content and applications directly in the Flash Professional 8 environment.
