BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Millions of residents and businesses in the Southern United States are benefiting from Verizon Wireless' multi-billion dollar network investment in the region. Already operating the nation's most reliable voice and data network, Verizon Wireless improved its technology lead by recently expanding its Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. In other southern states such as Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee, Verizon Wireless has invested millions in local communities, adding dozens of cell sites to extend service coverage areas this year. New retail stores have been opened throughout the region, featuring the full range of Verizon Wireless products and services and staffed with both customer service and technical support representatives.

Verizon Wireless has invested $35 billion in the last seven years across the U.S. -- $5 billion on average every year since the company was formed -- to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. In the South, the company has invested more than five billion dollars since 2000 in its unparalleled network.

Recent examples of network investments by Verizon Wireless across nine southern states include:

Texas/Louisiana

  • Continued expansion of the EV-DO network to more than a dozen metro areas in Texas, including the Sherman/Denison, College Station, Port Arthur, Longview, Tyler and the Rio Grande Valley.
  • Store openings and dozens of new cell sites to enhance coverage throughout Texas.
  • Expansion of the EV-DO network in Louisiana to the Shreveport/Bossier City metro area.

Mississippi

  • Continued expansion of the Jackson area network with more than 20 cell sites added since the market launched in April.

Arkansas

  • A network investment of almost $24 million in 2006 to expand and enhance service.
  • November launch of Verizon Wireless network in Conway with 18 cell sites.
  • Central Arkansas network expansion with the addition of more than 30 new advanced digital cell sites in and around Little Rock.

Alabama/Georgia

  • Expansion of the EV-DO network to the Augusta, Columbus, Albany, Savannah metro areas of Georgia as well as to Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Enhanced coverage from new cell sites including those in Bexar, Colbert County and Cedar Bluff in Alabama; and Columbus, Statesboro and Dublin in Georgia.
  • Expanded network in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Florene, Rogersville, Courtland, Jacksonville and Gadsen to improve coverage and capacity to the Alabama metro areas.
  • A network investment of more than $138 million to date in 2006 in Alabama and Georgia.

North Carolina/South Carolina/Tennessee

  • Expansion of the EV-DO network in North Carolina to the Greenville, Winston/Salem and Wilmington areas. EV-DO network expansion in South Carolina, including Myrtle Beach, Columbia and Greenville.
  • Expanded in Eastern North Carolina with new cell sites and stores to serve Wilmington, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Goldsboro, New Bren and Jacksonville.
  • Enhanced network coverage thanks to new cell sites along the South Carolina coast including Myrtle Beach and Charleston.
  • A network investment of $445 million in North Carolina since 2000.
  • New cell sites throughout Tennessee including in Johnson City and Greene County.

Florida

  • A network investment exceeding $1 billion statewide during the past six years.
  • Continued expansion of the EV-DO network throughout the state including the metro areas of Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville and Tallahassee, and launched the service in Pensacola, Gainesville, Ocala, Daytona, Melbourne, Lakeland, Naples, Bradenton and Sarasota, Charlotte and Lee counties.
  • New cell sites were activated during the past six months in Jacksonville, Neptune Beach, Tallahassee, Yulee, Orlando, Sanibel Island, Ocala, as well as the counties of Hillsborough, Pasco, Citrus, Charlotte, Collier, Lee, Madison and Suwanee counties to enhance coverage throughout the state.

The Verizon Wireless EV-DO network, which continues to be rolled out throughout the region, allows customers access to the latest high-speed business and entertainment services on their wireless phones, laptops and other wireless devices. BroadbandAccess allows customers to connect wirelessly to the Internet, download e-mail and applications, and log into their corporate servers via their laptop with typical connection speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second (kbps).

The Verizon Wireless V CAST service gives customers access to short video content, downloadable music and cutting-edge 3D games on their mobile phone. V CAST provides current news, weather, sports and entertainment programming on demand. And with access to more than 1.4 million songs, music lovers with a V CAST Music-enabled phone can download and play their favorite songs — all while on-the-go.
