BACKGROUND:
The Verizon Wireless network is built for reliability in emergencies, with battery back-up power at all facilities and for additional reliability, generators installed at all switching facilities, and many cell site locations.

This winter, a major snowstorm hit Colorado, causing tough travel conditions and knocking out electricity. Because wireless phones are essential for customers and emergency responders during times of emergency, Verizon Wireless' network team traveled to a company cell site located on the mountain to make sure that there was enough fuel to keep the cell site operating through the storm. While in the mountains, the network team discovered the reason electricity was cut off and helped the utility company get up the mountain to fix the problem, restoring power to Verizon Wireless' cell site, as well as the cell sites of competitors.
