ORANGEBURG, NY — Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the most reliable voice and data network, is seeking grant proposals for domestic violence prevention and education projects in the New York/New Jersey Metro area. Qualifying nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for competitive grants totaling $30,000, made possible through the company's HopeLine® phone recycling program.

HopeLine grants are being offered to enable agencies, shelters and other domestic violence advocacy groups to introduce or expand programs, add equipment or enhance facilities to better serve clients. Three individual grants, up to $10,000 each, will be announced in October during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Project proposals must be postmarked or e-mailed by July 15, 2007.

Last year's grants funded projects that delivered benefits to both survivors and the community. In New York, The Center Against Domestic Violence in Brooklyn supported a Relationship Abuse Prevention Program poster contest, held in 15 New York City public schools to raise awareness and respond to the impact of interpersonal violence among teens. Palladia, Inc. used its grant to support a therapeutic arts program at Athena House, a New York City haven for women and children who have survived abusive situations. In New Jersey, the YWCA of Eastern Union County in Elizabeth started a speaker's bureau aimed at educating men and boys about positive attitudes toward women and girls.

"Domestic violence awareness and prevention is Verizon Wireless' chief community focus," said Charles Hand, president of the company's New York Metro region. "It is our hope these grants will continue to provide the spark that ignites innovative programs that help move families from crisis to confidence."

Verizon Wireless will give strong preference to grant proposals that:

  • Emphasize the benefits of new or expanded programs or services.
  • Include an implementation plan with a defined beginning and end.
  • Define measurable results.

To qualify for funding, an applicant must be designated a public or private 501(c) (3) non-profit organization with a valid Internal Revenue Service tax ID and based in the Verizon Wireless New York Metro region which includes the following: five boroughs of New York City; Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties in New York; and Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union, Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey. For an application and additional information, please call 973-830-7397.

Verizon Wireless' commitment to fighting domestic violence began in 1995 when the company — then Bell Atlantic Mobile — first introduced its HopeLine program. Over the past 12 years, HopeLine has grown significantly and is now a multifaceted program that includes a successful wireless phone recycling and re-use effort; financial support for local domestic violence organizations, free phones, service and voice mailboxes for victims; community and corporate awareness initiatives and a bilingual "Invest in Yourself" program designed to help survivors reenter the workforce.
