FRANKLIN, IN — Verizon Wireless and the Verizon Foundation have donated more than $300,000 in cash grants, phones and airtime to shelters and other organizations in Indiana working to support victims of domestic violence and their families. In Franklin, Turning Point of Johnson County received $9,000 in phones and airtime.
Most of the donations statewide are a result of the company's successful HopeLine® program, which turns no-longer-used wireless phones into support for victims of domestic violence. Wireless phones, batteries and other accessories are collected at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores nationwide and in special collections throughout the year. The phones are either refurbished for reuse or recycled in an environmentally sound way.
This October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Verizon Wireless encourages all wireless phone users to donate any used wireless equipment to its HopeLine program. Phones and accessories can be dropped off at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store.
"Domestic violence affects more than 30 percent of American women during their lifetime," said Greg Haller, president-Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. "I highly encourage everyone to dig through their closets, ask friends and family members for their used phones and accessories, and donate as much wireless equipment as possible to the HopeLine program and help make a difference in the lives of the victims in Franklin and throughout Indiana."
Since October 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 4 million phones, donated more than $4 million and provided more than 45,000 wireless phones with wireless service to local organizations nationwide that provide direct services and support to victims as they work to rebuild their lives.
