CHANDLER, AZ — From Glendale to Scottsdale to Tempe and everywhere in between, Verizon Wireless customers can make more calls and use more data as football's biggest game and golf's most highly attended tournament come to the Valley of the Sun.

Reliability game plan
"Verizon Wireless customers in the Valley can rely on the nation's most reliable voice and data network for calls, downloads and e-mails," said Tony Heyman, regional president, Verizon Wireless. "We are committed to ensuring that our network lives up to its excellent reputation for everyday use and during major events like these."

The company's ongoing network investment totals $635 million in the Grand Canyon state and more than $40 billion nationally over the past seven years.

Verizon Wireless customers also benefit from the company's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) broadband wireless data network, available throughout the state. The Rev. A data network gives customers the ability to wirelessly download and upload e-mail, corporate data, videos, the Internet and more at broadband-like speeds.

Pre-game preparations
To prepare for the influx of game-goers, Verizon Wireless has been hard at work for more than 18 months to ensure that the network is at peak performance. The network has been readied to handle the three to ten times spike in usage that is typical during the big football game.

These preparations include:

  • The addition of a cell site inside the University of Phoenix Stadium.
  • The addition of three new sites in Glendale to provide additional coverage and capacity at the stadium and Westgate Center and surrounding areas.
  • Deployment of a fully-equipped mobile cell site, a Cell on Wheels (COW), with wireless voice and data service positioned at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
  • Deployment of a COW in Scottsdale to provide additional coverage and capacity at the FBR Open.
  • Sundancer, the company's Cell on Light Truck (COLT) mobile emergency response cell site, at-the-ready for deployment.
  • Full optimization of the network in the Valley at key locations including at Sky Harbor Airport, in the city of Scottsdale, high traffic areas including downtown Phoenix, and major transportation corridors.

The starting lineup
In addition to these preparations, Verizon Wireless added eight new cell sites in the West Valley in 2007, including at the Arizona State University West campus in Glendale and in Goodyear along Interstate 10.

Last year, the company also added permanent cell sites for voice and data coverage in Scottsdale along 101 Freeway near the Pima Princess exit and surrounding area and in north Phoenix along West Bell Road and a portion of 101 Freeway.

Verizon Wireless added a total of 32 new cell sites in Arizona in 2007 and invested $135 million to expand and enhance its wireless network in the state.
